The past century has exploded with proxies for climate history. Most are natural in origin, but some meteorologists and climate scientists have studied paintings by artists such as Ruisdael, Constable, Turner, Munch, and Monet for evidence, for instance, of weather systems or atmospheric aerosols. This talk considers the implications of climate signals on canvas for a philosophy of nature and of aesthetics and hopes to do further damage to the horrible idea of the two cultures of sciences and arts.
Bio: John Durham Peters is María Rosa Menocal Professor of English and Chair of the Program in Film and Media Studies at Yale. His new book, The Meaning of Weather: A Media History, will appear in June 2027 from the University of Chicago Press.
